Students taking Observational Astronomy I (ASTR 320) use the modern telescopes at Lookout Observatory, located on a mountain ridge above the UNCA campus.

The Astronomy minor at UNCA facilitates two paths: one is designed for physical science majors and provides a rigorous preparation for graduate studies in physics/astrophysics; the other is open to students of all majors, who are interested in a comprehensive study of astronomy from historical and applied perspectives.

Our available courses and paths through the Astronomy minor can be found at the link below:

Many students who are interested in graduate studies in astronomy also choose to supplement the required 18 credit hours of astronomy coursework with independent research (PHYS 499), which can be taken for credit with an instructor’s permission.
