Philip G. Carson Distinguished Professor in the Sciences
Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy, UNC Asheville

Dr. Britt Lundgren is the Philip G. Carson Distinguished Professor in the Sciences and an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina Asheville. She holds an A.B. in Physics from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Her research involves pairing large ground- and space-based surveys of distant galaxies and quasars to study galaxy evolution, the intergalactic medium, and large-scale structure.
After completing a postdoctoral appointment at Yale University and an NSF Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she spent one year as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow in the NSF’s Division of Undergraduate Education, where she undertook an analysis of the NSF’s Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) program and helped to facilitate the interagency working group on STEM Engagement established by the National Science and Technology Council’s Committee on STEM Education. Dr. Lundgren has held multiple leadership roles in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), including leading a report on the collaboration’s demographics and co-chairing the education and public outreach efforts for SDSS-IV. She has served as a member and chair of the Advisory Board for NASA’s North Carolina Space Grant, and she received a Cottrell Scholar Award from the Research Corporation for Science Advancement in 2020. Since 2022 Dr. Lundgren has served as an NSF appointee to the Astronomy and Astrophysics Advisory Committee, which advises the NSF, NASA and the Department of Energy on issues within the fields of astronomy and astrophysics that are of mutual interest and concern to those agencies.
